Canada extended their gold-medal winning string in the Women’s World Hockey Championship to seven with a tense evenly-fought 3-2 victory over the United States at Mariucci Arena Sunday night.

Tammy Lee Shewchuk, Dana Antal, and Jennifer Botterill tallied goals for Canada, but the real star of the game for Canada was goalie Kim St. Pierre, who made 33 saves, and made repeated big-time saves in pressure situations. While the U.S. did score their final goal on a power play situation, St. Pierre managed to deny the Americans the net on four other power play opportunities, often knocking away repeated close-in shots.

The Canadians tallied first, with an Antal goal at 8:09 of the first period. The U.S. equalized the score on a great individual effort by Carisa Zaban, who took the puck across the front of the goal and poked it past St. Pierre’s right skate at 17:36 of the opening period.

Shewchuk gave Canada a 2-1 lead at 9:45 of period two, and Canada extended the lead to 3-1 with a Botterill goal at 16:45 of the final period.

After pulling goaltender Sarah Tueting, the U.S. pulled to within a single goal with 1:19 left in the game, but couldn’t find the net for the equalizer. Then Karyn Bye was penalized for tripping with 59 seconds left, and the U.S. was unable to mount any effective offensive effort in the final seconds.

The U.S. finished second in the Worlds for the seventh straight time, a string broken only by their gold medal performance at the 1998 Nagano Olympic Games.

Quotes

USA

Head Coach Ben Smith
"It was another of our hard fought battles. When we head into an important game I have two objectives, that we play hard and leave it all on the ice, and that everyone is healthy. And tonight both objectives were accomplished."

"We had good chances. Their goalie stood tall. She cast a tall shadow and was a rallying point for her team."

"These two teams are even. In preparing to play Canada we talk a lot about playing the team in the mirror. It usually comes down to a few bounces."

(On the strategy in the third period, when the U.S. was behind by one goal)
"We tried to put as much pressure on them as possible. We tried to draw a penalty, by shorter shifts, fore-checking."

"It was frantic in the last two minutes. When you’re running out of time, the clock is your enemy. It seemed frantic. It’s not something we’ve had a lot of practice in, pulling our goalie. We’ve had to do it only once this season."

(On the fact that Canada only had 16 shots)
"If someone had told me before the game that we would have held them to 16 shots, I would have signed that agreement."

(When asked about the gap between US and Canada)
"There is no gap. And I mean no disrespect. This game could have gone either way."

Cammi Granato
"This loss leaves a big void, a big emptiness. Their goaltender played great. It’s an empty feeling to not come away with what you’re trying for.

"This loss can’t take away from how far we have come as a team, both on and off the ice. A loss like tonight’s both motivates you and leaves you with an empty feeling.

AJ Mleczko
"One of the great things about this rivalry is our close games and tonight was no exception.

Canada

Head Coach Daniele Sauvageau

"We played a very good game. The result took care of itself.

(About the fact that five young players were added to the team this year)
"We had five players in their first World Championship. It was a very hard decision, because there were five veteran players who could have played on this team. A lot of people thought that we would be sacrificing this World Championship to bring on five young players."

(About the fact that Canada didn’t use a resident-team system like the USA)
"I believe that there are things coaches can’t teach. By putting our players in different situations, in college, in club hockey, it only makes them better. They play for different coaches. Jennifer Botterill (Tournament MVP, who plays for Harvard) has only become a better player in college."

(About the physical nature of play between USA and Canada)
"Canada and US is always a very physical game, because that’s where the game is at between the two. We can’t play this kind of game against Kazakstan. But the refs let more of this go with these two teams."

Goalie Kim St. Pierre, MVP of the gold medal game
"This is my fourth World Championship, but my first time playing in the Championship game."
"There are days for a goalie when you don’t see the puck but you make the saves."

Coach Sauvageau (replying to that comment)
"To give credit to Kim, she may say she doesn’t see the puck, but she does a good job of getting her body between the goal and the puck."
